What are the Bluebells of Scotland?
By Erin Whalen

When asking "What are the bluebells of Scotland?" it is important to know that whatever answer you receive, you can be sure it will be a spiritual one. In essense the bluebells of Scotland symbolize gratitude and are often associated with everlasting love. The shape of the flower itself is said to represent a girl in a bonnet with her head bowed in prayer.

Bluebells are stunning flowers that grow in shaded or sunny areas. They grow from bulbs and are easily naturalized. Because of their invasiveness over time they spread, creating vast fields of blue. Each of these delicate blue flowers is bell-shaped. They grow in North America, Western Europe, and Nort Africa. They thrive in forests, mountainsides, coastal areas and grasslands. Since they're not known as a Scottish flower..."What are the Bluebells of Scotland?"

Scotland has a rich archive of stories relating to the wild bluebells that grow thoughout their land. Because of this history, a legendary Celtic song has been passed down through many generations. The title of this song is " The Bluebells of Scotland."

The lyrics tell of a girl's lover who has gone off to war, she knows is her heart that her love will bring him back safely and it uses the metaphor that the bluebell is a symbol of everlasting love.

So the questions remains , " What are the Bluebells of Scotland?" The bluebells of Scotland are best described as a legend, although many believe their power to be true. From April to August the forest floor becomes a carpet of blue bells amongst the ferns, and is said to be where fairies gather for conventions. No human is allowed to see the fairies and if one does, he or she will hear the sound of the bluebells ringing. This is a sure sign that death is on the way.

Another legend is the belief that if a child wanders into a patch of bluebells , he or she will be held captive there by the far. Any adult who happens to wander into one of these magical patches will be held captive as well, that is, until another human comes in to lead them out.

Those who practice fairy magic though are quite enthralled by the bluebells. They have even nicknamed the plant " Fairy Thimble." Many plant them in their own gardens to attract fairies. Bluebells are said to be the most powerful plant for performing fairy magic. Some even weave an anklet out of bluebells and wear it to dance in the garden at night.

It is said the fairies will hear the bells and come to your garden.

Today, bluebells are our doorway to magic and miracles.
