Perennial Balloon Plant
A Flowering Pentagram

The perennial balloon plant flower which comes in several colors including red, white, purple, orange, pink, yellow, and an astounding periwinkle blue is considered to be a mystical flower because it is in the shape of a five pointed star. The five pointed star is of course quite sacred to many pagan religions which consider this to be the universal shape, with the two points at the sides representing mankind. The points at the bottom of the star represent the human arms and legs, and the top point signifies the head. Therefore, the perennial balloon plant flower is the perfect blossom to be found in the garden of a humanitarian.

You are probably wondering why a flower that looks like a pentacle is called a balloon flower. This perennial acquired its name because in the early stages of growth when it is in bud form, the closed petals puff up and look just like a blown up balloon.

The balloon plant flower is quite delicate, and the average specimen grows to be between eighteen inches and two feet tall. It is one of the last flowers to bloom in the Spring and enjoys a peak blossoming period during July and August.

Yet another great feature of the perennial balloon plant flower is that it is easy to grow. This species is usually disease free, and deer and other pests don't seem to like the taste of the big, fat, moist looking petals. It is simply one of those "no fail" types of flowers, and you don't need much of a green thumb to grow one.

One of the perennial balloon plant flower's most attractive natural attributes is that butterflies love them. This not only adds visual interest to your garden in the form of scores or hundreds of bright flying creatures every day, but in Feng Shui, and almost all forms of magic, the butterfly symbolizes an animal that brings good energy to the owner of the garden. The only exception is the red butterfly, which in both Chinese and Celtic cultures is thought to be the incarnation of evil fairies or witches that are seeking revenge on humans that have wronged them.
